THE keys to a new £3.2million doctor’s surgery and church have been officially handed over.

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council , which funded the project, passed over the keys on Tuesday, ending a 10-year wait for the facility in South Ham.

Borough councillor John Izett, Cabinet member for property and finance, said: “I am delighted that work on these new and much-needed community facilities is now complete.

“It’s clearly a very important facility for the residents of South Ham.”

The new surgery, with seven consulting rooms, a dental practice and pharmacy, has been built next door to a new Methodist church with community meeting rooms, on the site of the former St Andrew’s Church at the junction of Western Way and Pinkerton Road.

Now called The Camrose Medical Partnership, it replaces the outdated and cramped surgery in Paddock Road and the satellite surgery in Moorhams Avenue, Hatch Warren, which were run by Dr Hudson and Partners for more than 11,000 patients. Anne Phillips, practice manager, said the facilities bring a host of benefits for patients.

She added: “South Ham surgery was long past its’ sell-by-date. We have now got access for disabled patients, which is wonderful.

“Another huge advantage is the space that we have here. Our community nurses and midwives will be able to come more often.

“I would like to emphasise that we will provide a personal service to patients.”

GP Nick Western, who was based at the surgery in Hatch Warren, added: “Being on one site we will be able to talk to each other and resolve any problems more quickly.

“Having the computers all together will also make our job so much easier.”

The council worked closely with the church, the Primary Care Trust, local doctors and residents to develop the new buildings.

Contracts director Shaun O’Donovan, of construction company Leadbitter, which carried out the project, said that such a ‘green’ building should have low running costs.

Deacon Ruth Yorke will hold the first church service this Saturday, and said: “We have prayed and dreamed and imagined and hoped and are really excited.”

The doctors’ surgery will open on Monday and the dentist on Tuesday.
